Natural Science Flashcards
What are the properties of a solid?
They are easy to see, has a definite shape, takes up definite space and does not flow.
What are the properties of a liquid?
Most are easy to see, has no definite shape, takes up definite space and can flow
What are the properties of a gas?
Not easy to see,no definite shape, takes all space AVAILABLE and can flow
What are the 3 states of matter?
Solids,liquids and gases
How are particles arranged in a solid?
They are arranged in a regular pattern touching each other
How are the particles in liquids arranged?
They are close together but not necessarily touching each other
How are particles arranged in gases?
They are all spread out and move very quickly in different directions.
What are the three basic properties of matter?
Mass, volume and shape
What are the tiny particles that make up matter called?
Atoms
What is volume?
It is the amount of space that matter takes up
What is mass?
It is the amount of matter an object has
What happens to water vapour when it is cooled?
It condenses and turns into droplets of water
What is the first step in the water cycle?
Evaporation
What is the second step in the water cycle?
Condensation
If this was a snow or hail water cycle what would the third step be?
 solidifying
What is step four in the water cycle?
Precipitation
What is step five in the water cycle?
 melting
What is evaporation?
The process of turning from liquid water to water vapour (which is gas)
What is condensation?
It is the change of water from its gaseous form(water vapour) into liquid water
What is solidify?
The process of turning into a solid
What is precipitation?
It is the release of water from the sky.It can be liquid or solid
What is melting?
It is the process of a solid changing into a liquid
What are the properties of metals?

They are strong, hard, shiny, malleable, ductile, melt at a high temperature and conductors of heat or electricity
What does malleable mean?
It’s means to be able to be beaten or hammered into shape’s.
What does ductile mean?
It’s means to be able to be drawn into wires
What is an alloy?
It is two or more metals mixed together or a metal mix with a non-metal
What are the properties of non-metals?
They are brittle, dull, poor conductors of heat, non-malleable and on non-ductile
What are the special properties of iron?
It is used to make objects like tools, nails and weapons because it is strong. The problem is it rusts
What are the special properties of Gold?
It is a valuable metal, very malleable, easily worked into jewellery and never goes dull
What are the special properties of silver?
It is a valuable metal, shines brightly and is used for jewellery
What are the special properties of copper?
It is used for electric wires and is a good conductor of electricity
What are the special properties of aluminium?
It is very light and strong and is used to build planes
What are the special properties of zinc?
It does not rust
What are the 4 magnetic metals?
Iron,nickel,cobalt and steel
What does tarnish mean?
It is the dull layer that appears on non-iron metals
What does corrode mean?
To break down
Name the metal that can rust
Iron
Give 3 ways to stop metals rusting:
Coat in plastic
Paint them
Coat in grease or another mental that does not rust
What does magnetic mean?
It is the materials that are attracted to a magnet
What is rust?
It is the brown/red layer that appears on iron
