Natural Rubber Flashcards
does a rubber band have a limit of elastic deformation
no it will always return to original shape as long as it doesn’t break
What does a force extension curve look like for a rubber?
initially follows hooke’s law for a very small force
then great extension is observed for a small change in force
at some point the rubber becomes very stiff and it will be hard to extend it up to the breaking point
Why is there a great extension for the small forces?
as small force is needed to untangle the molecules (as rubber is a chain of atoms in disordered fashion)
Why does the rubber become stiff:?
When the chain of atoms are fully extended additional forces are needed to stretch the bonds between the atoms
