Natural/Quasi experiments Flashcards
Natural experiments
- Conducted in a completely naturally occuring event
- No control over the IV
- Exp Measures the DV
- No control over extraneous variables
Differenecs of natural and quasi
Natural - The researcher makes use of naturally occouring (situational) varibles.. The IV is the natural occuring event
E.g. Studying the after effects of a natural disaster
Quasi - The researcher makes use of naturally occouring (internal) varibles. This IV is a quality of pt’s (internal).
E.g. if the IV is gender we cannot randomly allocate people to either the male or female condition, they already are one of this.
Strengths
Typically the greatest ecological validity due it’s real life qualities. This means we get to record there actual response and is very valid so it has the greatest ecological validity.
Least likely to suffer from bias from demand characterisitcs. The Pt’s are in there real normal state of mind, there normal enviorment. means it has higher validity.
Weakness
Most difficult to establish cause and effect. There in their natural occouring state of mind and the enviorment meaning we can’t establish the cause and effect which means it may have low validity.
Most to difficult to check reliability. Lacks control because it lacks standardised procedures.
