Natural hazards pose major risks to people and property Flashcards
Natural hazard
Any event that has the potential to endanger human life, the economy and property
Natural event
Something like an earthquake, which causes no damage to people or property
Factors affecting hazard risk
-Urbanisation – lots of the worlds population lives in cities and many of these are at risk from hazards
-Farming – flooding crops
-Poverty – housing isn’t strong enough to withstand hazards
-climate change – warmer atmosphere gives more energy which leads to more intense storms
Different types of hazards
-Atmospheric hazards
-Terrestrial/geological hazards
-water-based hazards
-Biological hazards
Atmospheric hazards
Created in the atmosphere by the movement of air and water, e.g. hurricanes
Terrestrial/geological hazards
Created by the movement of the earths tectonic plates or surface rock, e.g. landslides
Water-based hazards
Created by rivers, seas or oceans, e.g. floods
Biological hazards
Any biological substance that poses a threat to the health of people e.g. disease
