Tropical storms develop as a result of particular conditions Flashcards
1
Q
what is the pressure like at the eye of the storm?
A
very high pressure
2
Q
what is a tropical storm?
A
a destructive storm that occurs between the tropics of cancer and capricorn
3
Q
what is the pressure like in a tropical storm?
A
low pressure
4
Q
what can you expect from tropical storms?
A
heavy rain, winds over 74mph, widespread damage, possibility of a storm surge
5
Q
what are the four triggers of tropical storms?
A
-water over 26.5°C
-summer and autumn (when sea temperatures are high)
-latitudes greater than 5°N or S (any closer there isn’t sufficient spin for the rotation of the earth)
-low pressure tropical areas
6
Q
how do tropical storms form?
A
- the sun sends solar radiation to earth which warms the oceans
- the oceans warm to a crucial 26.5°C
- this causes warm air to rise which creates low pressure
- air cools as it rises which creates clouds and rain
- some cooled air sinks back, creating the eye of the storm
- air rushes in from higher pressure areas to lower pressure areas creating winds
- the whole storm rotates because of the earths spin
