Natural Hazards Keywords Flashcards
Adaptation
Actions taken to adjust to natural events such as climate change,to reduce potential damage, limit the impacts, take advantage of opportunities, or cope with the consequences
Climate change
A long-term change in the Earths climate
Environmental impact
Effect of an event on the landscape and ecology of the area
Economic impact
Effect of an event on the wealth of an area or community
Extreme weather
When a weather event is significantly different from the average or usual weather pattern, it is usually severe and unseasonal
Global atmospheric circulation
The worldwide system of winds, which transports heat from tropical to polar latitudes.
Hazard risk
Probability or chance that a natural hazard may take place
Immediate response
Reaction of people as the disaster happens in the immediate aftermath
Infrastructure
The basic equipment and structures needed for a country or region to function
Long term responses
Later reactions that occur weeks, months and even years after the event
Mitigation
Actions taken to reduce or eliminate the long term risk to human life and property from natural hazards
Monitoring
Recording physical changes to help forecast and predict when a natural hazard might strike
Orbital changes
Changes in the pathway of the earth around the sun
Planning
Actions taken to enable communities respond to and recover from natural disasters
Prediction
Attempts to forecast when and where a natural hazard will strike based on current knowledge
