NATURAL HAZARDS Flashcards
What is a natural hazard?
a natural process which causes deaths, injury or disruption to humans
What are the two types of natural hazards?
- geological = caused by the Earth and the tectonic plate movement
- meteorological = all to do with the weather and atmospheric condition
What is a hazard risk?
the chance or likelihood of an event happening due to a natural hazard
Name the three factors affecting the risk?
- urbanisation (population density)
- ability to cope
- nature of natural hazards
Explain how does urbanisation affect the risk AND an example?
more people living in an area = more people are impacted by a NH(natural hazard)
EXAMPLE: the city Naples , in Italy is at the base of a volcano = that there are more vulnerable to volcanic eruptions
Explain how does the ability to cope affect the risk AND an example?
different populations of people deal with the risk of NH/ND differently due to abilities
EXAMPLE: HIC’s are better coping with floods = can afford to build flood defenses and evacuate people
Explain how does the nature of natural hazards affect the risk AND an example?
type = risk from some hazards are greater than others
EXAMPLE: tropical storms can be predicted and monitored = people have time to evacuate
frequency = some NH that occur more often may have higher risk
magnitude = more serve NH mostly have greatest effects
EXAMPLE: 9.0 magnitude earthquake in Japan (2011) killed 15,000 BUT 6.3 magnitude earthquake in Italy (2009) killed 300
