Natural Hazards Flashcards
What is a natural hazard
A natural hazard is a natural event or phenomenon that has the potential to have a negative impact on people or human activities
What is a hazard risk
It is the chance or possibility of being affected by a natural hazard
What factors effect risk
Poverty: have less defence against it
Urbanisation: if more people live in cities then more people will be affected.
Describe two types of plates
Oceanic- more dense, thinner
Continental- less dense, thicker
Name 9 reasons why people live in hazardous areas
Fertile land

How does wind travel
Wind always travels from high to low pressure
What is high pressure
Calm clear weather, cold air sinks, diverting winds
What is low pressure
Storms, cloudy weather
Hot air rises, converging winds
What is a tropical storm
Areas of extremely low pressure
Form over oceans
The vapour from the ocean cools and condenses which form cumulonimbus clouds which foster around an area of high pressure
Where are tropical storms found
All tropical storms form between the equator and the tropics.
Why do no storms form on the equator
This is because the coriolis effect is not strong enough
Which part of the world have the most number of tropical storms
South east Asia
What does magnitude mean
This is the size, scale and power of a storm.
What temp does the water have to be above
27
What time of year to they mostly form in
Summer and autumn
What is a constructive plate boundary
This is two plates moving apart
What happens at a constructive plate margin
As they separate magma forces it’s way through the gap
When it reaches the surface the magma erupts and forms volcanoes.
As the mama breaks through the crust it generates small earthquakes
What is a conservative plate margin
Plates moving side by side in different directions
