Natural Hazards Flashcards
define natural hazards
naturally occurring events that pose a risk to human life and property
state the types of natural hazards
atmospheric: (weather) tropical storms
geophysical: caused by the movement of tectonic plates - earthquakes, volcanoes
hydrological: caused by the movement and distribution of water - flooding, droughts
state the factors affecting natural hazards
deforestation: destroying large areas of forest can increase the risk of natural hazards such as flooding
wealth: LICs often have more people living in high-risk areas and might have less capacity than HICs to cope with disasters
climate change: gives rise to more volatile weather - rising temperatures can increase the risk of tropical storms
