natural and adaptive immunity Flashcards
immunity
body’s ability to fight foreign invaders this includes; natural immunity and adaptive immunity
natural immunity
present fighter cells at birth; natural killer cells (NK), macrophages, monocytes, neutrophil no prior exposure
adaptive immunity
ability to recognize and remember certain antigens
t cells
recognizes and remember antigens to attack faster
b cells
releases antibodies
vaccination
injection of a dead virus cell so lymphocytes can remember and secrete antibodies against the virus
antitoxins
ready-made antibodies that help fight against toxic harmful bacteria
maternal antibodies
antibodies of the mom transferred to baby while their immune system grows, transferred through placenta or breast milk after birth
humoral immunity
b cells produce antibodies after exposure to specific antigens; type of adaptive immunity
plasma cell
b cell matures into plasma cell produces antibodies called immunoglobulins
immunoglobulins
secreted by plasma cells in response to an antigen; antibodies produced are IgA, IgE, IgG, IgM, IgD
cell medicated immunity
t cells (cytotoxic, helper t cells, suppressor t cells) respond to antigens and destroy them
helper T-cell
help B-cells in making antibodies and stimulated T-cells to attack antigens
cytotoxic T-cells
immediately kills antigens by producing a chemical (cytokines) that is toxic to antigens
suppressor T-cell or regulatory T-cells
prevent T and B cells from attacking body’s good cells
