lymphatic system; anatomy Flashcards
lymph capillaries
scattered throughout body to collect excess interstitial fluid; open into lymphatic vessels
lymph vessels
carry lymph through the body and empty lymph into veins in upper chest
lymphatic ducts
right lymphatic duct, and thoracic duct
right lymphatic duct
takes lymph from right side of the head, chest, and right arm; empties lymph into vein in neck
thoracic duct
takes lymph from lower body and upper left side ( head, neck, arm, chest, legs), empties into vein in neck
lymph nodes
stationary lymph tissue contain cells (macrophages and lymphocytes) that fight infections, located along lymph vessels
major lymph node sites
- cervical (neck)
- axillary (armpit)
- mediastinal (chest)
- mesenteric (intestinal)
- paraaortic (lumbar)
- inguinal (groin)
tonsils
are large lymph tissue in the throat near back of mouth (oropharynx)
adenoids
enlarged lymph tissues in throat near nasal passages (nasopharynx)
large vein
located in neck where lymph from lymphatic duct re-enters bloodstream
lymphocytes
2 types of lymphocytes B cells and T cells
B cell (B lymphocytes)
develop in bone marrow and mature into plasma to release antibodies
T cells (T lymphocytes)
have memory of what antigens look like so if they re-appear t-cell can fight them off
