NATOPS Intro And Ch 1 Flashcards
Purpose of NATOPS
The Naval Air Training and Operating Procedures Standardization (NATOPS) Program is a positive approach toward improving combat readiness and achieving a substantial reduction in the aircraft mishap rate.
Scope of NATOPS
NATOPS products have been developed to improve aviation safety and readiness throughout the Navy and Marine Corps. They are prepared under the authority of the CNO and issued by COMNAVAIRSYSCOM to support naval aircraft flight operations. NFMs contain flight clearance information, operating procedures and restrictions necessary for flight crews to effectively operate their aircraft. They provide the best available T/M/S aircraft information and operating instructions for most circumstances. However, no manual can address every situation completely or be a substituted for sound judgement. Operational situations may require modification of the procedures contained therein. Read these products thoroughly. As an aircrew member, it is your responsibility to have a complete knowledge of their contents.
Types of NATOPS Changes
Urgent, Priority, and Routine. Urgent and Priority change recommendations are changes that usually involve safety-of-flight matters and cannot be allowed to wait for implementation until after the next formal review.
Warning
Explanatory information about an operating procedure, practice, or condition, etc., that may result in injury, death, or loss of aircraft if not carefully observed or followed.
Caution
Explanatory information about an operating procedure, practice, or condition, etc., that may result in damage to equipment if not carefully observed or followed.
Note
Explanatory information about an operating procedure, practice, or condition, etc., that must be emphasized.
Shall
Is used only when application of a procedure is mandatory.
Should
Is used only when application of a procedure is recommended.
May/Need Not
Are used only when application of a procedure is optional.
Will
Indicates futurity and never indicates any degree of requirement for application of a procedure.
Land Immediately
Mean execute a landing without delay
Land As Soon As Possible
Means land at the first site at which a safe landing can be made.
Land as soon as practicable
Means extended flight is not recommended. The landing site and duration of flight are at the discretion of the pilot in command.

Seats in an SUW Configuration
3 Cabin seats, Max 2 Passengers
- Use of the sonobuoy launcher window is prohibited
- Up to 5 cabin seats may be installed in the Logistics/VERTREP or SAR/Medevac configuration. A max of 4 seats may be occupied in any configuration. Litter installation prevents use of the SO console seat and instructor seat.
- The starboard rear seat may be occupied if the dipping sonar is removed. The center rear seat may be installed if the dipping sonar, sonobuoy launcher, and RAST probe are removed. The port rear seat may be installed if the dipping sonar and sonobuoy launcher are removed.
Seats in a Logistics/VERTREP configuration
Less than or equal to 5 cabin seats, Less than or equal to 3 passengers.
Seats in a SAR/MEDEVAC Configuration
Less than or equal to 5 cabin seats, Less than or equal to 3 passengers.
- The LHEP significantly reduces the FOV and the success rate of obtaining visual contact with a survivor when performing SAR lookout duties from the SO window. Due to the visual restrictions, dedicated SAR missions should consider removal of LHEP to enhance probability of detection/sighting of survivor.
- Due to decreased area at the cabin door, dedicated SAR with the RHEP installed is not recommended.
Seats in an ASW Configuation
2 cabin seats, 1 Passenger max
- Use of the sonobuoy launcher window is prohibited
- Up to 5 cabin seats may be installed in the Logistics/VERTREP or SAR/Medevac configuration. A max of 4 seats may be occupied in any configuration. Litter installation prevents use of the SO console seat and instructor seat.
- Due to confined cabin space, dedicated SAR in an ASW configured aircraft equipped with ALFS is not recommended.
Configuration Warnings
- In the event of a crash, the SO console seat poses a head strike hazard to passengers in both the port rear seat and center rear seat. If the port rear seat or center rear seat are occupied, the SO console seat shall be unoccupied and secured in the full forward position.
- Only a simula seat shall be installed in instructor seat location. Installation of other seats poses a head strike hazard in the event of a crash.
- The instructor seat shall not be occupied if the GAU-21 is to be placed in the inboard stow position. Gun shall remain in the firing position if the instructor seat is occupied.
- The center rear seat shall be removed if the RAST probe is installed. The RAST probe prevents proper stroking of the seat in the event of a crash.
- The center rear seat shall be unoccupied if conducting VERTREP.
- The simula seat should be removed during flights not requiring its use. When installed the simula seat creates an egress hazard for the aircrewman.

Who is the NATOPS Model Manager?
HSM-41 is designated as the NATOPS Model Manager Unit and Lead Evaluation Unit for the MH-60R helicopter NATOPS products set.
SUPERHAWK
Because of the prevalence of H-60 aircraft use within the Navy, a process has been implemented to align all Navy H-60 NATOPS manuals to the max extent possible. The term SUPERHAWK refers to the alignment process for the applicable T/M/S versions of the H-60… The purpose of the SUPERHAWK review is to develop a common solution for each common issue that will be addressed during the individual product reviews.
