NATO previous involvement in conflicts

A

Afghanistan - following 9/11 - international security assistance force was established in 2001. Mission was to develop new Afghan security forces and enable Afghan authorities to provide effective security and prevent Afghanistan once again becoming safe haven for terrorists. Contributed to the reconstruction and development in Afghanistan

NATO current involvement

A

1999 Kosovo. ensure safe and secure environment, & freedom of movement, deter renewed hostilities. 4500 allied and partner troops

2018 non combat advisory and capacity building mission in Iraq, to strengthen Iraqi security institutions and forces so they can prevent return of ISIS, fight terrorism and stabilise their country

Maintaining practical cooperation with the African union. provided airlift to the AU mission in Sudan 2005, AU mission in Somalia 2007 by providing air and sealift for AU peacekeepers. Providing capacity building and expert training to the African standby force which is part of AU’s long term peacekeeping capabilities

NATO air policing mission- ensure integrity of airspace of the countries that don’t possess fighter aircraft

Disaster relief such as Türkiye earthquakes in 2023 - temporary shelter for 1000’s and coordinated air-bridge to deliver vital supplies from allies and partners

NATO involvement 1949-1990s

A

During cold war - powerful deterrent against military aggression. NATO not involved in a single military engagement during cold war

After cold war -
Op Anchor guard: 1990-91, After Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait, NATO Airbourne Early Warning aircraft deployed to Türkiye to monitor the crisis and provide coverage of SE Türkiye in case of an Iraqi attack during the first Gulf War
Op Ace Guard: 1991 in response to Türkiye request for assistance to meet threat posed by Iraq during the first Gulf War. NATO deployed the ACE Mobile Force and air defence packages to Türkiye
Op Allied Goodwill I & II: 1992, following break up of soviet union in 1991 & collapse of centrally-controlled economic system, NATO assisted an international relief effort by flying teams of humanitarian assistance experts & medical advisors to Russia & other commonwealth nations
Op Agile Genie: 1992 During period of Western tension with Libya after UN security council imposed sanctions designed to induce Libya to surrender suspects in the bombing of a Pan Am airliner over Scotland in 1988, NATO provided increased AWACS coverage of the central Mediterranean to monitor air approach routes from the North African littoral. NATO AWACS aircraft flew a total of 36 missions
