Wigwam
A round like used to form poles overlaid with bark, mats, or skins
Wampum
Beads made from shells. Native Americans used these for exchange and jewelry
Clan
A group of families as among the Scottish highlanders which descent from a common ancestor.
Longhouse
A dwelling of the Iroquois and other Native Americans. Consisting of bark framework about 100 feet long.
Iroquois Confederacy
A union of people who join together for a common purpose.
Compromise
A situation when groups on each side of an issue each give in a little to reach an agreement.
Potlach
A special feast in which the guest, and not the hosts receive the gifts. Fun fact: Potluck dinners originated from this tradition.
Totem pole
A tall carved log used to honor an important person or to mark a special event. It was usually placed in front of a
community house
Salmon
A type of fish that was prevalent in the Columbia River and other parts of the west coast
Plank house
A traditional type of house that was built from wood and large enough for several families
Canoe
A type of boat that is small and has two paddles that are used to steer to make it move.
Prairie
Flat or gently rolling land covered mostly with grasses ad wildflowers very few trees.
Lodge
Homes made of logs covered with grasses, sticks, and soil.
Coup stick
A special weapon used by the Lakota Sioux. They would use this to show bravery my touching an enemy with it in battle.
Travois
A sled like device used to transport goods
Tipi
Cone shaped tents made by leaning long poles together, tying them together at the top and covering them with animal skin
Jerky
Thin strips of sundried meat
Kiva
Underground rooms used for religious ceremonies
Kachina
In the pueblo region, the kachina is the living spirits of an ancestor
Hogan
Dome shaped Navajo dwellings made from log or stick frames covered with mud or sod
Pueblo
A Spanish word meaning village. Hopi- style apartment homes that could contain two levels and often had a ladder to enter the house
Mesa
A mountain or hill with a flat top and steep sides

A method of farming in which crops were grown in dry places
