There were 3 main types of Native Americans. What was the main factor that determined how they each lived?
Their different environments and climates.
What was the environment like for the Eastern Woodlands indigenous people?
Very hot summers and very cold winters.
How did the Eastern Woodlands people use their resources? (Think land and waterways)
- They used wood to build longhouses, canoes, and bows and arrows.
- They used the rivers/seas for fishing, trade and communication.
- They used animals like deer and bear for food, clothing, and as insulation for longhouses.
What foods did the Eastern Woodland farm?
Corn, pumpkin, sunflowers, and beans. They also had berries, deer, bear, and other small animals.
How were longhouses managed?
- They were communal
- Permanent structures
- Fires in the middle
- Bedding and storage along the sides
- Adapted to suit the weather
- Managed by women.
What did the Plains people live in?
Teepees. This was because they were nomadic. They were made of 12 buffalo skins.
What did the Plains people need for survival?
The Buffalo.
How did the Plains people use the buffalo?
- Meat as food
- Tendons for sewing thread
- Hooves for glue
- Bones for tools
- Fat for soap
- Skin for clothing, teepees
What did the Plains people farm?
Maize, pumpkins, beans
What two changes impacted the lives of the Plains people?
- Introduction of horses: they used them for hunting/fighting
- Introduction of Woodland people onto their lands.
What was everyday life like for the Plains people?
- Women did cooking, cleaning, made clothes.
- Men hunted.
- Events like ceremonies, dances and various rituals.
What was the environment like for the South West people?
Very hot in summer, but heavy snow in winter due to altitude.
How did the South West people live?
In permanent communities called pueblos. Houses were:
- dug out of the ground
- double storey
- external ladders for access
- communal ovens
- underground ‘kivas’ for meeting and ceremonial events
What did the South West people farm?
Corn, beans and pumpkin. They also had buffalo.
