Why was immigration to America from England encouraged?
- New business opportunities.
- The independence that land ownership offered.
What was the early years of contact like between the British and the Woodland people?
- Friendly and peaceful. Europeans had superior weapons but were in an unknown land.
- Evidence for this are treaties.
What was traded during the initial stages of contact?
Cloth, metal tools and utensils traded for beaver and raccoon skins.
What was significant about the Seven Years War?
- Ending in 1763, the Treaty of Paris began the nation building of America.
- The British gained more land and didn’t give any to the Native Americans even though they helped to fight the war.
What started Pontiac’s War?
- The bad treatment of Native Americans from the British.
What happened during Pontiac’s War?
- The Native Americans caught and killed hundreds of British.
- The British used biowarfare (smallpox infested blankets).
- Ended with the Royal Proclamation of 1763 which created a boundary between the colonists and native Americans.
What is mercantilism?
An economic policy whereby lots of exports are being sent from the motherland to colonies:
- maximise exports (what you send out)
- minimise imports (what you bring in).
- Encourages imperialism
What was the result of mercantilism?
- Upset settlers in the 13 colonies because they were working hard to produce goods/pay taxes for Britain, but weren’t receiving anything in return.
- Part of the reason for War of Independence
What was the War of Independence?
A war between North America and Britain for America’s independence.
Why did America want to be independent from Britain?
- “No taxation without representation.”
- They wanted to make their own decisions.
- General George Washington led the troops in the colonies and won.
How did the War of Independence impact the process of colonisation?
- ‘manifest destiny’, the expansion of white settlement in North America began.
- Settlers’ belief in the destiny of their new nation and in their duty to colonise.
- It was destined by God to expand and spread capitalism/democracy.
- Values reflected in the U.S Constitution.
