American Indian Movement- 1968
Started by Ojibwa men, Dennis Banks and Clyde Bellecourt. Goal: curb racial profiling by police and give voice to NA people and create laws for protected NA lands.
AIM Patrol
Support the Indian Health Board of Minneapolis= Health care for NAs. Watched for profiling.
Termination Policy 1953
Took control of NA lands, did not recognize them as nations, broke tribes, and told NAs to move to cities. But NAs lacked education and were racially profiled.
1969- Occupation of Alcatraz Island
Attention of cause, and to claim the land as Indian land. Also imitate Europeans taking over America.
Milestones
Thanksgiving 1970- seized replica of Mayflower and declared national day of mourning, 1971- Camp on Mt. Rushmore because of sacred site for tribes, 1972- Trail of Broken Treaties: 20 points as a declaration of wants for NA protection. Walk from San Francisco to DC
Indian Self-determination and Education assistance Act of 1975
Reveresed Termination Policy, provided recognition of tribes and funded their education
