State a brief outline of nationalism in West Africa during this period

A

Before WW1 Legislative councils had been introduced in Nigeria, Sirerra Leone and Gold Coast
BUT powers were very limited and lack of African representation
1919= political activists met in Gold Coast and fudned the National Congress of West Africa, but dominated by the gold coast elites
1920= British granted some concessions to congress demands for greater African representation but nationalsit politicans still outnumbered by appointed African Chiefs on legislative councils
Education did spread and employment opportunity with the West African Students Union being formed in 1925 by law students studying in London

State a brief outline of nationalism in East Africa in this period

A

British decison to establsih Kenya as a colony in 1920 provoaked the first indeginous political movement when GB enfranchised the white settlers only
-Harry Thuku emerged as first key East African National leadser
-1920 founded Young Kikuyu Association
-1921 founded East African Association
-1922 Thuku arrested = 7000 people held a protest where polcie and white civilians opened fire killing 25= Thuku exiled ot Somalia for 9 years
-1920s/1930s Thukus political group developed in his absence with other leaders emerging such as Jomo Kenyatta
-WW2 signficantly raidicalised Kenya nationalism= Thuku founded Kenya African Union in 1946 which Kenyatta took over in 1947 and led the party to indepdence in 1963

However 1935 major strike by African mineworkers in Northern Rhodesia agaisnt tax increases but violently suppresed by police forces deom SOuthern Rhodesia with 6 strikers shot dead
