Arab nationalism a reaction to colonialism and imperial occupation – no historical memories of a Palestinian identity. Function of the forced separation of Palestine from Syria and the struggle with Zionism.

Criticism and alternative to conventional view of Arab nationalism

A

Not the case that Palestinian nationalism solely a response to Zionism. Old and wealthy families recognised that they would be able to consolidate more power as Palestinian nationalists than as Arab nationalists (who would naturally be lead by Syrians)
