Nationalism and Definition by What it Opposes Flashcards
How is nationalism defined by what it opposes regarding opposition to anything not part of the nation?
Defined by its opposition to anything not within the nation state - resentment towards other nations - e.g. von Herder - ‘Spew out the slime of the Seine’ (Treatise on the Origin of Language 1772) - may lead to chauvinism and the idea that one nation is superior to another - inherently resentful - e.g. Hitler’s ‘Greater Germany’.
How is nationalism defined by what it opposed with regards to liberal nationalism?
Even liberal nationalism is contains elements of resentment - e.g. self-determination may lead to revolt revolt against the current nation state - e.g. Fidel Castro encouraging Cubans to revolt against the oppressive Batista - demonstrated through Garvey’s resentment of the colonialisation.
How is nationalism defined by what it opposed regarding conservative nationalists?
Like conservatives, conservative nationalists oppose any sort of change - if change is to occur, it is usually regressive and traditional - e.g. Maurras opposing post-revolution France - e.g. Marine le Pen in 2022 - ‘headscarf ban’ - arguably against French multiculturalism.
How is nationalism not defined by what it opposes in relation to liberal nationalists?
Liberal nationalists champion newly formed nation states - e.g. Rousseau claimed that the sovereignty of the ‘general will’ was the only way to achieve self-determination and freedom - this is the antithesis of developing tension and opposition towards the state - not defined by what it opposes.
How is nationalism not defined by what it opposes in relation to conservative nationalists?
Celebrate the preservation of the nation state and its organic cultural history - create stability and security for citizens - e.g. von Herder ‘has man nothing dearer than the language of his fathers?’ - demonstrated in the welsh language movement that celebrates Welsh identity through the shared Welsh language - supports culture; doesn’t oppose it.
How is nationalism not defined b what it opposes regarding chauvinist nationalism?
Chauvinists cannot be defined by what they oppose - e.g. in some cases they seek to celebrate their identity and reject opposite rule - e.g.. Garvey’s ‘Pan-Africanism’ - in ‘Negro World’ he promoted unity and collectivism - whilst in opposition to colonialisation, it doesn’t define nationalism as, in doing so, they favour collective identity.
