How can nationalism be defined broadly?
The belief that the nation should be the central principle for a political organisation
What is jingoism?
Extreme patriotism, especially in the form of aggressive or warlike foreign policy
What is political nationalism?
Focuses on attempts to use the nation to further political goals
Manifests in liberal nationalism, conservative nationalism, expansionist
What is cultural nationalism?
Focuses on the nation as a distinctive civilisation
Concerned with the primacy and defence of national language, traditions, religion & ‘way of life’ - ‘them and us’
What is ethnic nationalism?
Focuses on ethnic groups with perceived or actual common ancestry
Based upon a far more intense belief in national exclusivity & distinctiveness than cultural nationalism
What is a nation?
People who identify themselves as a cohesive group based on shared values in society
Cultural entities
Political entities
Psychological entities
What is self-determination?
The belief that nations should decide how they are governed
What is racialism?
The idea that humankind can be meaningfully divided into separate ‘races’ which each possess different behavioural characteristics or ‘natures’
Mostly defined as synonymous with racism
What is internationalism?
Essentially the opposite of nationalism, the belief that the world should unite across boundaries to advance their common interests in society
What is liberal nationalism?
Seeks a world of autonomous nation states
Assigns to the nation a moral status similar to that of the individual
What is conservative nationalism?
Exists to forge a sense of cohesion and unity within society
What is expansionist nationalism?
Rejects the right of all nations to self-determination, usually linked to chauvinism
What is anti/post-colonial nationalism?
Rejects colonial rule and seeks to have governance returned to the indigenous population
What are political party examples of liberal nationalism?
SNP, Plaid Cymru
What are political party examples of conservative nationalism?
Conservatives, UKIP, DUP
