national grid Flashcards
1
Q
what is the national grid a system of?
A
the national grid is a system of transformers and high voltage cables
2
Q
why is energy always lost in the power of cables
A
energy is always lost in the power of cables due to the resistance of wires
3
Q
how to reduce energy loss in cables
A
use transformers
4
Q
explain how transformers reduce energy loss in cables
A
- electricity passes through a step-up transformer which increases the potential difference to several hundred thousand volts
- less energy is lost in the power cables when the potential difference is very high
- the energy is then passed through high voltage wires
- electricity passes through a step down transformers which reduce the potential difference to 230 volts
- this is then sent into homes
