When is the Day of Reconciliation and why is it a national day?
16 December. It remembers the battle between the Voortrekkers and the Zulus, AKA the Battle of Blood River. THe Voortrekkers won because they had guns.
When is the Worker’s Day and why is it a national day?
1 May. Workers in Australia were fighting for better working hours- only 8 hours per day. Today people use it to fight for better wages and working conditions
When is the National Women’s Day and why is it a national day?
9 August. At the Union Buildings in Pretoria, 20 000 women protested against the law requiring black women to carry passes.
When is the Human Rights Day and why is it a national day?
21 March. At Sharpeville, a protest was held and 69 people were killed while protesting against the pass laws. This day reminds the peeps of SA of their rights.
`When is the Youth Day and why is it a national day?
16 June. Youth Day honours all young people. Students in Soweto were protesting against the introduction of Afrikaans as the language of instruction. One famous child who died was Hector Pieterson, who was caught on camera being carried away from the protest.
When is the Heritage Day and why is it a national day?
24 September. It celebrates SA’s diversity.
