Nat 4 - Multicellular Organisms Flashcards
What term is used to describe the result of a male gamete nuclei and a female gamete nuclei fusing together?
Fertilisation
How many parents are needed to carry out asexual reproduction?
Only one parent is needed and the offspring are all genetically identical to the parent plant
How would you take a cutting?
A branch from the parent plant is cut off at an angle, it’s lower leaves are removed and the stem is planted in damp compost
What are 3 conditions that seeds need to germinate?
Warmth, water and oxygen
What effect would increasing the carbon dioxide concentration have on the growth of plants?
The plants would grow quicker
What will lower the level of sugar in the blood?
Insulin
What is a gamete?
Sex cells
Name the 3 methods of asexual reproduction?
Tuber formation, runner formation and bulb formation
Why are plants which are grown commercially often grown in a poly tunnel?
This ensures that they are warmer, protected from the wind and will grow faster
In genetics, which form of the gene will always show up in the offspring?
Dominant
In genetics, which form of the gene may not show up in the offspring?
Recessive
What is homeostasis?
Homeostasis is when the internal environment is kept constant and this allows the body cells to work efficiently
What are blood sugar levels kept constant by?
Hormones
What is glycogen and where is it stored?
Glycogen is a carbohydrate formed from glucose and is stored in the muscles
What is glycogen used for?
It’s used to supply the muscles with glucose during long periods of exercise
