OPIOID NARCOTICS
Morphine, codeine, hydrocodone (vicodin), oxycodone, etc.

MECHANISM
React with endogenous opioid receptors.
INDICATIONS Analgesia: Mod/Severe, acute or chronic pain. Anti-tussive (cough) Anti-diarrheal Dyspnea associated with MI.
SIDE EFFECTS
Mental status changes including drowsiness.
Nausea/vomiting.
Constipation
ADVERSE EFFECTS Postural hypotension Respiratory depression Tolerance leading to increased dosages dependence and addiction Withdrawl=nasty

NON-OPIOID NARCOTICS
Acetominophen (Tylenol)

MECHANISM
Weak inhibitor of prostoglandins
INDICATIONS
Used for mild to moderate pain relief.
Antipyretic
NOT and anti-inflammatory
SIDE EFFECTS
Most are severe.
ADVERSE EFFECTS
In very large doses can cause liver damage.
