APAP/Codeine Indications/Dosage
Relief of Mild to Moderate pain
Adults: 1-2 tab q4h PRN (#2 or #3)
Children: 1-2tsp 3-4x/day
Relief of Moderate to Severe pain: 1 #4 tab q4h PRN
APAP/Codeine Mechanism
APAP: inhibits prostaglandin synthesis in CNS, and blocks pain impulse generation
Codeine: weak mu-opiate receptor agonists, metabolized to morphine
APAP/Codeine metabolism and excretion
Metabolized by CYP450 enzymes
Excreted through kidneys
APAP/Codeine drug interactions
Other DNS depressants, alcohol: increase CNS depression
Hydantoins (phenytoin) and sulfinpyrazone (treats gout): increased risk of hepatotoxicity
APAP/Codeine CI/Precautions
Increased ICP Head injury severe hepatic or renal impairment prostatic hypertrophy or urethral stricture presence of acute abdominal conditions

Dizziness, drowsiness, constipation, nausea, vomiting, excessive sweating
APAP/Codeine Patient Education
May cause drowsiness, see how it affects you before planning on doing anything
Avoid alcohol
May take with food/milk to avoid GI upset
May be habit forming
Shake suspension well before dosing
