what is nacrolepsy
chronic neurological disorder that affects the brains ability to control sleep wake cycle
symptoms of narcolepsy
feeling rested after waking, but then feeling very sleepy throughout most the day
hallucinations
excessive daytime sleepiness
sleep paralysis
sleep disruption
non drug advice on narcolepsy management
- take frequent, brief naps evenly throughout the day
- stick to strict bedtime routine
- relax before going to bed e.g. warm bath
- good sleeping environment e.g. free from distractions, quiet, comfortable temp
- avoid caffeine, alcohol, smoking before bed
- do not exercise too close to bedtime (2 hr gap)
- do not eat large heavy meals
should you advice patients with narcolepsy to exercise before bedtime to help them make it easier to sleep at night
no, ensure 2 hour gap between finishing exercise and going to bed
