Indications
-Respiratory depression induced by opioids/narcotics
-Unknown coma to rule out opioid/narcotic use or suspected opioid use
Action
competing with opioids at opiate receptor sites in the brain, booting or filling the receptor site instead of the opioid
Contraindications
None in emergency setting
Precautions
can cause immediate withdrawal symptoms, which can lead to a combative patient. Preoxygenate patients with high flow oxygen to help with brain hypoxia whenever possible as this may help prevent combative behavior.
Route/Dose
Adult: SQ/IM/IN
0.5mg - max dose 8.0mg
Pediatric: IN/IM
0.1mg/kg
