Nanoparticles And Nanoscience Flashcards
What is nanoscience?
Nanoscience is the study of structures that are between 1 and 100 nanometers in size.
What are nanoparticles made up of?
Most nanoparticles are made up of a few hundred atoms
What is a nanoparticulate?
A substance which consists of nanoparticles
What are nanoparticulates used for?
Medical treatments, cosmetics, deodorants, suncreams, and electronics
What are the risks of nanoparticles
Some people are concerned the minuscule size of nanoparticles makes it possible to breathe them in, or for them to pass into cells.
Once inside the body they might catalyst reactions that are harmful.
Toxic substances could bind to them because of their large surface area to volume ratios, harming health if nanoparticles do get into the body.
Modern nanoparticulate materials have only become recently, so it is difficult for scientists to determine their risks.
