Acids, Alkalis And Neutralisation Flashcards
What is a base
A base is any substance that reacts with an acid to form salt and water only
Examples of a base
Metal oxides, metal hydroxides and metal carbonates
Alkalis definition
Alkalis are bases that are soluble in water and they dissolve in water to form alkaline solutions
What is a neutralization reaction
A neutralization reaction is a reaction between an acid and a base
What are acids in solution sources of?
Hydrogen ions. H+
What are alkalis in solution sources of?
Hydroxide ion. OH-
How can a neutral solution be produced
A neutral solution can be produce did the correct amounts of acid and alkali react together
How can the change in pH be measured
The change in pH during a neutralization reaction can be measured using a pH probe and meter, or estimated using universal indicator solution and a pH colour chart
