Nano (New) Materials Flashcards
Smart Materials:
A material whose properties change depending on the conditions (e.g. temperature, pressure). An example of a material would be Nitinol - a shape memory alloy. It will return to it’s original shape at a certain temperature
Nanoparticles:
1-100 nanometres across. Nano means really small. Nanoparticles contain roughly a few hundred atoms.
What do nanoparticles include?
Fullerenes - these are molecules of carbon, shaped like hollow balls or closed tubes. The carbon atoms are arranged in hexagonal rings. Different fullerenes contain different numbers of carbon atoms.
EXTRA
Fullerenes can be joined together to form nanotubes. All those covalent bonds make carbon nanotubes very strong.
