Naming organic compounds Flashcards
1
Q
How to name an alkene
A
Identify the longest chain for the prefix (meth- eth- prop-)
Follow prefix with -ene
If chain is greater than 3, insert a number before -ene, to indicate the location of the double bond
e.g hexa-1, 4-diene has 6 carbon atom backbone, with a double bond at the first and fourth carbon atoms
2
Q
Naming cycloalkanes
A
If no branches - cyclo(alkane)
if branches - 2-ethyl, 3-methyl cyclo(alkane) (treat like a alkane)
3
Q
Naming alcohols
A
Identify the longest chain
Follow prefix with -ol
determine position of the OH group (e.g what carbon atom it stems from)
e.g butan-2-ol has 4 carbon atoms, and the OH stems from the second
