Naming Monatomic Ions & Ionic Compounds Flashcards
Define monatomic ion.
An ion consisting of exactly one atom.
Define number groups in T.P.T (The Periodic Table).
A column of elements in the periodic table of the chemical elements.
Define Block (T.P.T).
A set of elements unified by the atomic orbitals their valence electrons or vacancies lie in.
Define atomic orbital.
A function describing the location & wave-like behaviour of an electron in an atom.
Define valence electrons.
An electron in the outer shell associated with an atom, & that can participate in the formation of a chemical bond if the outer shell is not closed.
Define valence.
A whole number that represents the ability of an atom to combine with other atoms or groups or atoms.
Define electron shell.
The outside part of an atom around the atomic nucleus.
Define octet rule.
The tendency of atoms to prefer to have eight electrons in the valance shell. (hence the “oct” part in “octet”).
Define vacancy.
A missing atom or ion in a crystal lattice.
Define polyvalent.
Used to refer to atoms or molecules that have a valency of three or more.
Define crystal lattice.
A repeating three-dimensional pattern of atoms or groups of atoms in a crystal.
