Molecules & Compounds Flashcards
Define compound.
A group that contains two or more different elements held together by chemical bonds.
Define molecule.
A group of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds.
Define Electrostatic Attraction.
When a negatively charged atom is attracted towards a positively charged atom & vice-versa.
Define covalent bond.
A type of chemical bond where two or more atoms share one or more electron pairs.
Define ionic bond.
A type of chemical bond formed by an atom that loses one or more electrons that transfers to another atom.
Define subscript.
(of a letter, figure or symbol) written or printed below the line.
Define molecular formula.
A chemical formula that shows the number of different atoms present in a molecule.
Define chemical formula.
A chemical formula tells us the number of atoms of each element in a compound. It contains the symbols of the atoms of the elements present in the compound as well as how many there are for each element in the form of subscripts.
Define structural formula.
A chemical formula visusally displays the atoms of the molecule in the order they are bonded.
Define condensed structural formula.
A chemical formula that shows the order of atoms like a structural formula but is written in a single line to save space.
