Naming Coumpounds Flashcards
Cations with multiple charges scheme.
Use Roman numerals in parentheses to indicate charge
Fe^(2+) is iron(II) ion
Fe^(3+) is iron(III) ion
Ionic compound scheme
Cation(metal) left the same
Anion(nonmetal) replace ending with -ide
Sodium Chloride
Cations formed by nonmetal atoms scheme
End in -ium
Ammonium, hydronium
Common cations of 1+ charge
H+
Na+
K+
Ag+
Common cations of 2+ charge
Mg^2+
Ca^2+
Zn^2+
Common cation of 3+ charge
Al^3+
oxyanions
Polyatomic ions containing Oxygen
-ate is most common, -ite has same charge but 1 fewer Oxygen.
Hypo–ite has 1 fewer than -ite
Per–ate has 1 more than -ate
Classical naming system. Metals
Less positive charge is -ous added to Latin root
More positive charge is -ic added the the Latin root.
Fe^2+ = ferrous ion
Fe^3+ = ferric ion
