Naming Compounds Flashcards
1
Q
Ionic Bonds Naming
Two elements
A
metal + non-metal -> metal non-metal-ide
2
Q
Ionic Bonds Naming
Three+ elements
A
metal + non-metal + non-metal -> metal (find name of polyatomic ion)
A polyatomic ion is the part of a compound that is multiple non-metals
3
Q
Covalent Bonds Naming
A
The first element in the symbol is first part of the name. The second element (or group of elements) is second part.
Depends on number of atoms present in each element
i.e. SO2 is sulpher dioxide
4
Q
Common properties of Ionic compounds
A
- High melting points.
- High boiling points.
- A crystal lattice structure. (Solids break easily into sheets)
- Solids do not conduct electricity and are good insulators
5
Q
Common properties of Covalent compounds
A
- Low boiling/melting points
- Solids are soft and flexible
- Do not conduct electricity (good insulators)
6
Q
Common properties of Metallic compounds.
A
- High melting/boiling points
- Good conductors
- Malleable
- Shiny
