Names and Formulas For Ionic Compounds (Chapter 6, Lesson 3) Flashcards
1
Q
Formula unit
A
the chemical formula for an ionic compound, represents the simplest ratio of ions involved
2
Q
Monatomic ion
A
one-atom ion
3
Q
Rules for writing monatomic chemical formulas
A
- symbol of cation is always written first, then anion
- subscripts rep the # of ions of each element in an ionic compound
- if the subscript is one, its not written
- total change of the compound must equal to zero
4
Q
Polyatomic ions
A
Ions that are made up of more than one atom
5
Q
Rules for writing polyatomic chemical formulas
A
- never change subscripts of the atoms within the ion
- if more than one polyatomic ion is needed, place parenthesis around the ion
6
Q
Oxyanion
A
a polyatomic ion composed of an element usually a nonmetal, bonded to one or more oxygen atoms
7
Q
(+ or o) More than oxyanion exists for some nonmetals, such as nitrogen & sulfur
A
+
8
Q
Rules for naming ionic compounds
A
- cation is followied by anion
- for monatomic cations, use the element name
- for monatomic anions, use the root of the element name plus the suffix -ide
- oxidation number is written as a roman numeral in “()” after the name of the cation
- when compound has a polyatomic ion, uuse the name of a polyatomic ion in place of the anion or cation
