Checks and balances
Each branch checks on the other to limit their power (the president, executive branch, can veto a law passed by Congress, legislative branch.
Separation of powers
The government has 3 branches, each branch has their own job: legislative makes the laws, executive enforces the laws, and judicial interprets the laws
Federalism
Power shared between state and federal (national) governments: federal = delegated powers, state = reserved powers, shared = concurrent powers (ex. 10th amendment of the constitution)
Individual rights
Rights guaranteed by the Bill of Rights
Republicanism
Citizens vote for representatives
Popular sovereignty
People give the government its power (ex. Preamble: “We The People of the United States…”)
Limited government
Everyone must follow the law (even leaders) (ex. Limits on gov. are imposed by the Bill of Rights and by Article I “Powers denied Congress” and “Powers denied the states”.)
