The term ‘New Age Movements’ is so diverse that it cannot be viewed as a unified movement. Bruce claims that today’s society is characterised by an immense variety of beliefs. This is seen with the growth of NAM’s and reflects the emphasis on tolerance and individual choice of religion today.

New Age lacks the cohesion and discipline to bring about social change to the same extent as more established religions have done in the past, but it has had some impact on environmental issues and the consumer culture. More importantly, the growth of NAM’s provides further evidence of the erosion of faith in orthodox/traditional religion.

The existence of both NAMs and NRM’s fits in with the Postmodernist view of religion as people are offered a ‘pick and mix’ approach to belief systems with the wide variety of NRM’s on offer in society.
