The term NRM started to be used in the 1960’s because it was believed that the divide between ‘cult’ and ‘sect’ was inadequate to describe the variety of new organisations that had developed in society.

As the media and public at large tend to use the label ‘cult’ to refer to any non-mainstream religious organisation it is believed that the term NRM was a more meaningful way to describe new sects and cults.
