Pharmacology and action
Competitive inhibition at opioid receptor sites. Reverses opioid-induced
respiratory depression and sedation

Onset: <2 minutes IV. 2-10 minutes IM/IN Duration: 20 minutes-2 hours IV/IM/IN
Peak Effect: Less than 2 minutes IV. 2-10 minutes IM/IN

Indications
● Opioid-induced respiratory depression
IV. Contraindications
● Neonates of opioid-addicted mothers (relative)
● Opioid dependency (relative)

Adverse reactions and side effects
Cardiovascular: Hypertension/hypotension with rapid administration, dysrhythmias
Neurological: Restlessness, seizures, withdrawal symptoms in opioid-dependent patients
Respiratory: dyspnea, pulmonary edema
Other: Diaphoresis

Dosage
Adult: Initial dose of 0.4-2mg IV/IO/IM/ETT or up to 4mg IN.
Pediatric: Initial dose of 0.1 mg/kg IV/IO/IM/IN/ETT. Max dose: 2mg IV/IM/ETT or 4mg IN.

Special considerations
● Generally not beneficial in cardiac arrest

Drug interactions
● Incompatible with bisulfate and alkaline solutions
