Q
What is the difference between an absolute score and a relative score?
A
An absolute score can be interpreted without any context; it has intrinsic meaning. A relative score (like a percentile) has meaning only in comparison to something else.

Q
What do percentiles in statistical observations mean?
A
The first percentile refers to the bottom 1% of observations. In other words, the higher the percentile, the higher the percent of observations. (For example, if you scored in the 99th percentile on a test, that means that you scored higher than 99% of all observed test scores).
