Incised Wounds
Clean, straight cuts with heavy bleeding
Laceration
Blunt force tissue-tearing that leaves jagged scars
Abrasion
Skin rubbing off on rough surfaces. Little to no scarring occurs relating to the depth.
Puncture
An injury deeper than it is wide. The surface may heal too fast, trapping infection inside.
Avulsion
Skin tears from the epidermis hooking on something. Surgical reattachment is possible
Amputation
The loss of a distinct body part, like a limb, finger, toe, or ear. Often severe with profuse bleeding.
Nail Bed
Groove in which the nail plate lies
Nail Matrix
Supporting structure under the plate
Nail Root
Responsible for nail growth
Lunala
Half moon area at the nail’s base
Eponychium
Cuticle
Posterior Nail fold
Fold of skin at the nail’s base
Shaft and Root
Visible part above the skin, part under the skin
Hair bulb
Expanded section at the root’s base
Follicle and Arrector Pilli
Membranous closure/muscle attached to follicle that contracts (goose bumps)
