Epidermis, Dermis, Subcutaneous (Glands too) Flashcards
Epidermal Layers in Order:
(Stratum) Corneum, Lucidum, Granulosum, Spinosum, Germanitivum
Keratinocytes
Cells that produce keratin, a protein causing elasticity in skin and hair
Melanocytes
Cells in the Basal layer giving color to skin, hair, and eyes
Dermal Layers in Order (plus function):
Papillary Layer: Lies directly under the epidermis, causes finger prints
Reticular Layer: Elastic connective tissue forming skin framework and structure
Characteristics of Dermis
Well supplied with blood/lymph vessels, high number of capillaries, creates blushing through dilation of them
Subcutaneous Region
Layer under the dermis with adipose tissue for warmth and cushioning. Contains superficial fascia that covers the fat and connects skin with bone or deep fascia
Sebaceous Glands
Oil glands attached to hair follicles produce sebum, acidic oil that prevents infections and holds moisture.
Sweat Glands
Coiled, tubular glands within the dermis.
Eccrine: Sweat pathways high in number across the body.
Apocrine: Attached to hair follicles and secrete sweat containing fatty substances and proteins
