N17 - CNS infections III Flashcards
Viral Meningitis basic chars:
“aseptic” meningitis
- less severe
- Most commonly from Enterovirus (summer months)
- Herpesvirus (commonly year round)
- arboviruses.
Acute enceph - HSV location and sx
Frontal and temporal lobes
- psychosis, impairment of memory, and seizures
Acute Enceph - West Nile location and sx
Motor neurons of spinal cord
- flaccid paralysis of the lower extremities
Viral etiologies: Human to Human
Enteroviruses (fecal - oral )
Herpesviruses (neural pathway)
Mosquito borne
Arboviruses (spread by viremia)
Animal to human transmission
Rabies (spread by neural pathway)
LCMV - lympohcytic choriomeningitis virus; rodents;inhalation
Arboviruses (arthropod-borne) are have what viral structures?
RNA virus
- Flaviviridae + Toga = ss+RNA enveloped
- Bunyaviridae = ss-RNA enveloped.
Arbovirus xmission and life cycle
Vertebrate = reservoir, definitive host (often a bird)
vector = mosquito
humans and horses are dead-end hosts
Togaviridae- alphavirus
arboviruses - mild systemic disease, encephalitis
Flaviviridae - Flaviviruses
Arboviruses - mild systemic disease, enceph, epatitis, hemorrahge, shock
- St. Louis, West Nile, yellow fever virus, dengue virus
