N/S Physical Flashcards
A Source of Energy
Something that stores energy so it can be used later
Non- Renewable energy
a Energy source that cannot be replenished once it has been used
Fossil Fuels
Non-renewable
Coal, Crude oil, Natural gas
Examples of Non-renewable fuels
Fossil Fuels and Nuclear Fuels
Why do SA mine coal
Generate electricity
Make Fuel
Used for warming and cooking
Coal consists mainly of
Carbon
What is the byproduct when coal is used
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
What type of gas is Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Greenhouse gas
Greenhouse effect
Greenhouse gasses form a blanket around Earth
Prevents heat from escaping the atmosphere
Earth becomes warmer
Like a hot house/greenhouse
Advantages of coal
Cheap
Creates jobs
Disadvantages of coal
Pollution
Combustion releases lots of greenhouse gases
Coal reserves will be depleted in the long run (non-renewable)
Advantages of crude oil
Used for many different fuels
Disadvantages of crude oil
Has to be imported from other counties
Prices are variable, depends on politics & economy
(eg. war in Ukraine)
Natural gas is used for
Cooking food & barbecue (gas braai)
Gas lamps
Heating
Generating electricity
Where is SA’s nuclear power plant?
Koeberg, near Cape Town
