Myositis Ossificans Flashcards
1
Q
What is Myositis Ossificans
A
- Bone formation in soft tissue where is should not grow
- could be in ski, subcutaneous tissue
- skeletal muscle
2
Q
How is myositis ossificans diagnosed
A
- Imaging: CT, MRI, PET scan, US, X-ray
- biopsy
3
Q
Causes of myositis Ossificans
A
- Piece of calcium may be found between several fibers in the muscle belly or calcium may build up to form a spur, which projects from the underlying bone
- Myositis Ossificans Progressiva is often genetic and inherited
- Damage to muscle in form ofcontusion, sprain/strain, or repetitivetrauma
4
Q
Types of myositis ossificans
A
- Nonhereditary myositis ossificans
- myositis ossificans progressiva
5
Q
nonhereditary myositis ossificans
A
- Most common
- Occurs after an injury (often in the thighs or arms)
- Can also be referred to as:
- Myositis ossificans traumatica
- Myositis ossificans circumscripta
6
Q
Myositis Ossificans Progressiva
A
Occurs due to a gene mutation
- Obtained from parents or spontaneously
- Can also be referred to as:
- Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP)
7
Q
Symptoms of myositis ossificans
A
- Inflammation
- Decreased range of motion
- Pain with movement
- Persistent local edema
- Palpable protrusion in muscle
- Symptoms will increase after 2-3 weeks
8
Q
Medical treatment for myositis ossificans
A
- There is no cure for myositis ossificans progressiva
- Nonhereditary myositis ossificans often goes away with at-home treatments
- Nonsurgical treatments for both types of myositis ossificans
- surgery
9
Q
non surgical treatments for myositis ossificans
A
- Icing the bump○ Limiting activity to rest the area
- Gentle stretching○ Taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Using an elastic bandage to decrease swelling
10
Q
PT treatment for myositis ossificans
A
- Once diagnosed, the body part is immediately immobilized for about 2 to 4 weeks
- Following immobilization, gradually increased exercise is initiated to promote greater ROM
- Initial treatment will focus on decreasing pain
- Gently massaging the injured muscle for pain relief and to encourage mobility of the tissues and limb
- Patient education to rest from aggravating activities and prescribing gentle stretching exercises to help preserve current ROM with assist to gain further range
- Gentle strengthening exercises
