Myology Flashcards
What is myology?
The study of muscles, their function, and structure
Three muscular system functions?
Produce movement, maintain posture, produce heat
Three types of muscles?
- Skeletal muscle
- Smooth muscle
- Cardiac muscle (Myocardium)
What is voluntary muscle?
Muscle that you can consciously move. Skeletal muscle
What is involuntary muscle?
Muscle that can contract without conscious control. Smooth and cardiac muscle
What are the functional properties of muscle?
- Plasticity
- Contraction
- Relaxation
- Irritability
What is direct attachment of skeletal muscle?
Muscle is attached directly to the periosteum of the bone
What is indirect attachment of skeletal muscle?
Muscle is attached first to connective tissue tendon or aponeurosis, which is in turn attached to bone
What do synaptic vesicles contain?
The neurotransmitter; acetylcholine
Where does the neurotransmitter get released into?
The synaptic cleft
What does the transmitter do?
Changes the permeability of the muscle cell, allowing sodium to enter, which creates an action potential that moves along the muscle cell membrane
