Myocoses/Fungus Flashcards
Yeasts
Single cells
thick wall/capsule
Molds
Multi-cellular
hyphae (stem) and conidia
Dimorphic
either yeast or mold
cause primary systemic mycoses
Opportunistic Mycoses
normal flora
Candida
Aspergillus
Candidiasis
Canine, feline- yeast
exfoliative dermatitis of muzzle, inguinal area, scrotum, feet
Seborrhea, pruritis, alopecia
Avian, porcine- thrush
Equine, bovine- gastroesophageal candidasis with gastric ulceration
Aspergillosis
Mold
Canine- nasal, long nose; cat sneezing out clots of fungus
Equine- pulmonary aspergillosis, guttural pouch- can hemorrhage (carotid a.)
Avian- spore contamination of feed/litter; pneumonia
Dermatophytes
ringworm
mold
Microsporum and Trichophyton
Microsporum
M. canis!!!! most common in domestic animals
macroconidia- rough, thick-walled, multi-septate
rough hairs on outside, curvy tip
Alopecia, crusting, can be moist
Trichophyton
T. mentagrophytes- cats, dogs, rodents, humans
Macroconidia- smooth edges, thin walled
T. verrucosum- cattle - VACCINE
Malassezia
Dermatomycoses
lipophilic yeasts, part of cutaneous normal flora
peanut shaped
Dogs: otitis externa and dermatitis
Cats: otitis externa, chin acne
Sporotrichosis
Subcutaneous Mycoses
deep layers of skin, muscle, bone, connective tissue
- associated with trauma, agents found in soil
dimorphic
Cat: draining puncture wounds
Dog, horse, humans
Environmental from soil- gets in wound
Blastomycosis
Systemic mycoses- dimorphic
soil, wood
humans, dogs: cutaneous, ophthalmic, disseminated disease
- skin lesion growing from inside- out
- lungs
- Thick, walled yeast cells with single buds attached by broad base!
Transmission is rare
Coccidiodomycosis
Systemic mycoses- dimorphic
hot, dry environment
C. immitis- fungal pneumonia
Dogs: primary pulmonary infection (80%) and (20%) develop disseminated disease- lameness, cough, lymphadenopathy, diarrhea
ONE SPORE
Histoplasmosis
Systemic mycoses- dimorphic
Big macrocanidia, thick capsule
Along river: warm, wet soil
Dogs- respiratory and disseminated
Cryptococcosis
Systemic mycoses- yeast
Psuedo-hypae
CATS, Nasal cavity (rhinitis)
ocular lesions
