What causes myocarditis?
Infection (Coxsackie virus, fungal, bacterial or parasitic)
Cocaine
Chemo & other drugs
Autoimmune e.g. rheumatic fever and SLE
Sarcoid
Idiopathic
How does myocarditis present?
With:
Chest Pain
Tachypnoea/Tachycadia
Cyanosis
Arthralgia
Infection symptoms - Sore throat/malaise/fever/headache/fatigue
How do we test for myocarditis?
EC
Biomarkers - CRP = inflammation — cTn + Creatine Phosphodiesterase = myocardial damage
ECHO/MRI/CXR
Biopsy + PCR
FBC - including antibody levels
How do we treat myocarditis?
Mostly Its self limiting
Can treat infection - Antibiotics, IV immunoglobulins, Antifungals etc
NSAIDS & Prednisalone CCS as anti-inflammatorys
ECMO - Extra-corporeal Membrane Oxygenation
